Turn the symptom picture into a maturity level for each of the five sub-domains, so the financial work becomes measurable rather than a vague sense of mess.
For each area, read the five levels and record the one that most closely matches your current state today. The line most owners are crossing sits between Level 2 (aware of the problem) and Level 3 (actually capable). Be honest about where you really are, not where you would like to be.
Level 1: no real books, numbers unknown. Level 2: behind or messy books, numbers not trusted. Level 3: clean, current books and readable statements. Level 4: timely, reliable reporting. Level 5: real-time, fully trusted financial reporting.
Level 1: cash is pure surprise, crises are frequent. Level 2: watched only at the bank balance, reactive. Level 3: forecast, cycle managed, a reserve building. Level 4: proactively managed with a solid buffer. Level 5: cash is a managed strength.
Level 1: profitability unknown. Level 2: only the whole-business number, if that. Level 3: profit understood by segment, levers identified. Level 4: profitability actively managed and improved. Level 5: margin is a deliberate, optimized advantage.
Level 1: no budget, no targets, pure gut. Level 2: occasional, informal planning. Level 3: a budget, targets, and a decision framework in use. Level 4: decisions consistently data-driven, plan reviewed against actual. Level 5: rigorous, forward-looking financial planning.
Level 1: nothing tracked or reviewed. Level 2: occasional glances, no rhythm. Level 3: a KPI scoreboard reviewed on a cadence, driving decisions. Level 4: continuous financial management. Level 5: predictive, deeply embedded financial discipline.
