Produce, and actually understand, the three core financial statements, so you can read what the business is telling you.
Each statement answers a different question, and together they are the language of your business's health. Produce each one, then note what you read on it. The most important lesson: a healthy profit and loss does not guarantee healthy cash, which is exactly why cash flow is its own separate work.
| Statement | The question it answers | What to read on it |
|---|---|---|
| Profit and Loss (Income Statement) | Are we making money? | Revenue, costs, and profit over a period |
| Balance Sheet | What do we own and owe? | Assets, liabilities, and equity at a point in time |
| Cash Flow Statement | Where did cash actually move? | Cash in and out across operations, investing, financing |
An owner who can read all three has crossed the line from blind to sighted. If you cannot yet, do not treat that as a failure, have your accountant walk you through your own statements once. It is one of the highest-return hours you can spend.
