Purpose and Mission Framework.

Articulate why the business exists and what it does, and anchor that direction as the reference point for decisions.

Define the two pieces honestly, not as marketing copy. The test is honesty, not eloquence: your purpose is the real answer to why this business should exist at all.

A worked example

Purpose: "We exist so small manufacturers stop losing money to disorganized operations." Mission: "We install simple operating systems for owner-run shops of ten to fifty people, so their teams run the work without the owner in every decision." One names the difference you exist to make, the other names what you do and for whom.

Define the two pieces

Anchor it as a decision reference

A purpose the founder states but visibly ignores breeds cynicism, so anchoring it in real decisions is what makes it credible. Name where it will actually be consulted.
